Sugarcane Piece
2016
Two-hour participatory performance
Performing for Undisclosed Territory #10, Solo
Sugarcane Piece is a participatory performance that depicts the artist measuring lengths of her audiences’ tounges. She proceeded to gently hand them a piece of sugarcane of the same length. With one that also matches hers, she invites her audience to join her in a sweet ritual of chewing. This is to be reperformed durationally but most importantly, no single words to be exchanged between them.
This work presents the artist’s interest with the senses in particularly the tastebud. Treating it well is a reminder of life’s blessings. Tounges are also essentially a communication, in fact a storage of myriad languages. Words are crocheted into sentences for the purpose of delivering love but unfortunately at the same time, hate. Violence is then acted upon and results in apparent damages.
Within social context, Sugarcane Piece is a plea towards recovery. It begins with the sweetness we have flourished from the earth.
